Earth Hour: Will you turn out the lights?
Tomorrow marks the fifth annual Earth Hour.
Thousands of cities across the globe will help create awareness for energy reduction by shutting off lights, appliances and other electronic devices.
Surrey residents managed a mediocre attempt last year, seeing a 1.5 per cent reduction in consumption in 2011. A noticeable feat compared to wasteful West Vancouverites (.51) but nowhere near the stratospheric heights of Pitt Meadows (5.7).
But Surrey was down from 2010′s two per cent reduction and it seems city hall has yet to jump on this year’s bandwagon (their website still has 2011 information posted). But here’s what you can do to put in a better effort this year.
When: Saturday, Mar. 30, 8:30 – 9:30 p.m.
Where: Your place
What: Turn off everything that siphons electricity and affects your hydro meter (smart or otherwise). This includes rechargeable devices, as you’re defeating the purpose by firing up that laptop on banked energy.
